UJ launched U18 Football challenge

The University of Johannesburg in partnership with Gauteng department of sports, Arts and culture, the Gauteng Department of Education and SAFA Gauteng, will host African bank U18 football challenge.  This is another school tournament which for both boys and girls, aims to reach out to 15-18 year old learners born from the 1st of January 1999 or younger in both rural and urban areas.

Its aims are to create a platform for Universities to recruit potential football players and emphasize the importance of education in sports industry. The tournament will take place in 6 provinces, names Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Western Cape, Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Former Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini and Wits midfielder Ntshangase were also announced as ambassador of the tournament.

“This is a good tournament for youngsters, for me as a youngster I think is great opportunity for them to showcase their talents, they might be seen by scouts like me, I started at tournaments like these. My role is to motivate them, because I know what’s right or wrong if you want to be a professional player, I will help them to understand sports as professionals and hopefully help them to reach their dreams one day.” Said Ntshangase

The host of the Gauteng leg of the tournament, the University of Johannesburg, invited schools for provincial qualifiers, which concluded on the 19th of August 2017. The draw of main tournament was conducted at University of Johannesburg yesterday, Soweto campus, where 16 girls’ teams and boy’s teams were drown into four groups of four per segment.

The tournament will take place over three days from Friday the 1st of September until Sunday 3rd of September at the University of Johannesburg, Bunting road Campus.

The Winnig School per segment will receive R15 000 in prize money and an additional set of Adidas football playing kit. There will also be an individual prices per category will go to the goalkeeper of the tournament, defender of the tournament, midfielder of the tournament, striker of the tournament, top goals corer of the tournament and player of the tournament. Other awards will go to the coach of the tournament, referee of the tournament and teams who finish second, third and fourth categories.
