Orlando Pirates FC assistant coach, Rhulani Mokwena’s Sabelo Super Stars (SSS) thrashed local rivals Orlando Destroyers FC in an exciting clash on day 4 of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge. Although Mokwena was not on the bench for the game, his teachings and tactics were on full display as the team played attacking football with numerous goal scoring opportunities.
Great combination plays from SSS resulted in five goals with a brace Maula Seema. Having registered three goals in the first half of the game, SSS seemed to be running out of steam in the second half of the game as Orlando Destroyers gained some control of the game. Mokwena’s chargers slowly regained their dominance of the game as Destroyers could not convert their chances, netting two well-orchestrated goals.
Amongst the spectators at the match, was former Black Leopards defender, Thomas “Giggs” Madimba who played with SSS in the 2017 DWSSC. Madimba who hails from Dube in Soweto, is a proud product of this initiative by Discovery, as he reflects on how he used to play in the tournament from his childhood and still plays in the tournament post his professional playing days. The 32-year old defender is one of many players to have been scouted during the community soccer tournament as he was handpicked and signed by Dynamos within days of playing here.
“The tournament is great for players like myself because we still have an opportunity to be scouted and signed here. With that said, if I am not scouted, this remains a great advantage for me as it will help with my fitness in pursuit of a professional team.” said Madimba. “The tournament is even greater for the young ones, instead of being in the streets they are here. As spectators, I know they have hopes of playing here one day. This Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge is loved by many people and this could also be the result of having the tournament being hosted in this community, Soweto is known to have produced some of the country’s best players.” Madimba concluded.
Madimba will be in action for Dlamini X1 Experience as they take on Orlando West Academy on Day 5 of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge. Also set to make his first appearance for Mamba Stars FC in this year’s tournament is crowd favorite Tshepo “Skhwama” Matete whose showboating skills are part of what excites diski fans in this tournament.
