The Western Cape province kicked off another exciting edition of the COPA U15 Tournament on Saturday, 13 July at the Mandela Park Stadium in the heart of Khayelitsha.
The highly anticipated school’s tournament continued to live up to expectations as Portland High School were crowned the U15 trophy ® Western Cape Provincial Finals champions, after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Imizamoyethu Secondary School.
The globally acclaimed school’s tournament returns for another exciting year of talent identification and development of future stars under the watchful eye of Coca-Cola and SASFA.
The newly crowned champions made their intentions clear as early as the first match when they easily brushed aside Ilangalethu High School 5-0. With the two schools being the only teams in the group, they played each other twice to determine the group winner as Portland made it 2-0 in the return leg.
Imizamoyethu’s journey to the final was a rather challenging one compared to their counterparts.
Their first match was a 3-0 victory over Qhayiya Secondary School before being edged 1-0 by Beufort West Secondary School in their second group match. Imizamoyethu did however advance to the finals thanks to a better goal difference.
It was then the battle for the Western Cape crown between Imizamoyethu and Portland which went in the latter’s favour just before the final whistle. Portland were awarded a penalty that was converted and assured them a ticket to the COPA Coca-Cola® National Finals.
