A new KwaZulu-Natal COPA Coca-Cola® champion was crowned on Saturday, 24 August at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi after an exciting afternoon of school’s football.
With a total of 12 schools representing the various KZN districts, it was Masihambisane High School from Newcastle who were crowned the eventual champions and subsequently secured a place in this year’s National Finals.
Masihambisane became the sixth school to book a place in this year’s National Finals with the Free State and Gauteng province being the only remaining provinces.
It was a relatively comfortable opening encounter for the new champions when they easily overcame Gabi Gabi Secondary School 7-0. Masihambisane continued their fine form in their next match with a 6-0 victory over Ndlelanhle Secondary School as they continued marching forward.
Their semi-final match was the only time they conceded after they put four past Masibonisane High School to register a 4-1 victory and set up a final against Zwelibanzi High School.
With the winning momentum on their side, Masibonisane continued from where they left off with a convincing 3-0 victory in the final, a result that assured them a place in the National Finals as KZN representatives.
In attendance at the King Zwelithini Stadium was graduate and ambassador, Khulekani Kubheka who heaped praise on the spirit of sportsmanship in KZN.
“Today brought back so many memories of my days playing at this very tournament that launched my career. It was quite pleasing to see how Coca-Cola® continues to instill the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship which are some of the values that I still live by. Well done to the new champions and we look forward to seeing them at this year’s National Finals,” said Kubheka.
