Former Nigeria Olympic captain Promise passes away

Ex Nigeria youth and Olympic star, Isaac Promise, passed away on Thursday (3 October 2019) in the United States of America, his club Austin Bold has announced. He was 31.

“Austin Bold FC is heartbroken by the death of Promise Isaac who passed Wednesday night at the age of 31. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates,” the club said in a statement.

“We are sad to hear of the sudden demise of former Super Eagles forward, Isaac Promise. Promise was captain of the Beijing Olympics’ Eagles squad that won silver. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time,” the Nigeria Football Federation posted in a tweet.

Promise is remembered for his days with Nigerian youth teams notably the U-20 and Olympic teams.

He was the captain as Nigeria won the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (then African Youth Championships) in 2005 in Benin, scoring both goals in the final against Egypt. Later same year, he led the Flying Eagles to the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship losing 2-1 to Argentina in the final.

In 2008, he again led Nigeria to the final of the Olympic Games in Beijing, again losing to Argentina.

He spent most of his career in Turkey with stints with Genclerbirligi, Trabzonspor, Manisaspor, Antalyaspor, Balikesirspor, Karabjuspor and Giresunspor before leaving for the USA in 2018 joining Georgia Revolution.

Promise joined Austin Bold for the 2019 season, featuring the for the second-tier side until his death.
