The Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) U20 Youth Championship has already kicked off with Group A fixtures that took place at the University of Botswana. The host nation opened the tournament with a goal-less draw against Mozambique. Malawi is top of the group after they defeated the Seychelles by two goals to nil. The tournament kicked off on Thursday, 1 December 2011 and will end on Saturday, 10 December.
The South African Under 20 Men’s National Team (Amajita) will take on Mauritius today (Friday, 2 December) in their opening match of the COSAFA Under 20 Youth Championship.
Kick-off is at 17h00.
South Africa arrived in Botswana on Wednesday to conclude preparations for the event. They have been drawn with Mauritius, Tanzania and Zambia in Group C.
The South Africans completed a light training session at the match venue (University of Botswana) on Thursday morning (1 December).
The Amajita squad will be without Supersport United defender Grant Kekana in the first match as he will be playing for his club. He will be released after the weekend fixture against Orlando Pirates and will join his compatriots in Botswana ahead of the second match.
Amajita coach, Solly Luvhengo has shown his appreciation to the Supersport technical team for releasing the player for national team duty outside of the FIFA dates.
“We are positive about our opening match, and we feel we have done enough to prepare for not just this match but for the entire tournament. I believe the long training camps we have had have helped a great deal, and we are ready for Mauritius. Grant will be assisting his club this weekend, it will not be set back for us as we have other players to slot into his place. And I really appreciate the support offered by Supersport in releasing Kekana for National team duty, and I want to pass my gratitude,” said Luvhengo.
