Discovery Walter Sisulu delivers an Early Christmas for Grannies at Soweto Nike Centre

The community of Soweto gathered at the Nike Training Centre in
Pimville this past long weekend to watch young rising stars show off
their football skills. There was a spectacular community festival on
the 16th of December 2011 where ladies participated in the soccer
challenge showing that football was indeed a sport taken seriously by
the ladies as well.

Wellness screenings were held on the Friday together with Discovery
and Phil Mogodi, president of the Soweto Football Association and
tournament director, whereby senior citizens from the community were
able to be tested for blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. Mogodi
thanked all the goggas from the community for taking the time to join
in on the day and get tested, and also stressed the importance for the
whole community to be tested regularly. “It was great to see that the
seniors from the community actively take the time to support the
festival and participate in the screenings, they are truly great
examples for the younger citizens of the Soweto community,” said
Mogodi.

A soccer clinic was also held whereby children from the local primary
school, Batsogile Primary, were able to learn how to play soccer and
develop their skills. The clinic was conducted by Teboho Moloi,
Orlando Pirates assistant coach. The adopted school, Batsogile
Primary, received soccer kits after a successful clinic.

Sandile Mkari, Discovery sponsorship manager said, “It was great to
have had the opportunity to interact with the children and to have
taught them a few soccer skills. It is important that we are able to
keep these children safe and off the streets by providing a safe
playing environment for them.”
