Banyana Banyana resume Olympic preparations in Stellenbosch

Banyana Banyana national head coach Joseph Mkhonza has included three uncapped players in a 24-strong squad that will train at the Stellenbosch University Sports Performance Institute (SUSPI), Western Cape from Thursday, 12 April 2012.

The national camp is a continuation of the team’s preparations for their first appearance at the Olympics Games, to be held in London in July.

The national camp will run through to April 21, with goalkeeper Viwe Mpeta (Kovsies FC, Sasol League Free State) and midfielder Leah Sethunya (Maluti Ladies, Sasol League Free State) both having got call-ups. These players were identified by the national coaches at the Sasol League Road Show held in Welkom on March 17.

The other newcomer is midfielder Jade Davids, who plays her club football for Galaxy FC in the Sasol League KwaZulu Natal.

“This is further proof that the door is still open as far as picking the best players for the Banyana Banyana team that will fall under Team SA at the Olympics is concerned,” said Mkhonza.

“We will assess these players to see if and how they fit into the Banyana Banyana set up and stand by our mandate to send the best of the best players to the London Olympics in a bid to do our sports-loving nation proud.”

Mkhonza also extended a call-to-camp to former national captain Portia Modise. The 29-year-old striker, who plays her football for Palace Super Falcons in the Sasol League Gauteng will report to camp along with another former national team player, Cape Town Roses (Sasol League Western Cape) striker Vuyiswa Mdwekesha.
