Maritzburg united Hold Chiefs to a Draw

In the first 10 minutes of the game Kaizer Chiefs saw themselves exhanging good strings of passes, but they were unable to create goal scoring opportunities.

Maritzburg United created their first opportunity in the 15th minute of the game, when Cuthbert Malajila found himself in a box but his attempt was well saved by Bafana’s number one

In the 19th minute of the game, Itumeleng Khune was called to party when he tipped a long range from Mario Booysens that could have seen Maritzburg united taking the lead.

Amakhosi’s first real attempt on goal came in the 26th minute when Willard Katsande was on the end of a Siphiwe Tshabalala’s corner-kick, but the Zimbabwean shot went over-bar

Maritzburg took the lead just after the break when Chiefs failed to clear the ball from a set-piece and the ball rebounded off Morgan Gould the goal line. As the defender tried to clear the ball it fell into the path of Booysen, who slotted home from close range.

In the 79th minutes of the game Amakhosi levelled matters from a corner-kick – Mathoho rising highest to power home a header beyond the reach of a back-peddling Walters. There were a few half-chances towards the end of the game – including Cuthbert Malajila just missing a cross for a sure goal – but the two sides settled for a point which not only maintains Chiefs’ seven-point lead.
