Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United will meet for just their second cup match when they clash in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 04 October 2014, kick-off at 20h15.
Coach Stuart Baxter ” One expects a tactical approach from both teams with the information from last week still fresh. This is a cup tie and it’s a new game.”
Chiefs have been in imperious form this season, recording 10 successive wins across all competitions, including a 1-0 win over their Pietermaritzburg opponents over the weekend.
Chiefs reached the semifinals of last year’s Telkom Knockout before they were beaten 1-0 by the eventual champions Platinum Stars.
The Soweto giants have played 20 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording 10 wins, five draws and five defeats. They have won all five of the penalty shootouts they have been involved in.
The Amakhosi have lifted the trophy three times in the Telkom Knockout era, winning the competition in 2007/08, 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Chiefs and Maritzburg have met in just one previous official cup clash.
That encounter was a Coca-Cola Cup (forerunner to the Telkom Knockout) match in 2005 that saw the Amakhosi claim a 2-1 win.
Overall, the teams have met in 18 matches across all competitions since 2005/06.
Chiefs have claimed eight victories compared to four for the Team of Choice, while six matches have been drawn.
The Amakhosi have won six of their 10 home matches against the KwaZulu-Natal side, suffering two defeats in the process. Chiefs are unbeaten in their last five meetings with United, including a 1-0 win in a league match this past weekend.
