We will bounce back – Janine Van Wyk

After suffering a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Cameroon in their opening group match of the African Women’s Championship, Banyana Banyana will not give up on their goal of qualifying for the 2015 Women’s World Cup which is scheduled for Canada.
Cameroon scored the only goal of the match in the dying minutes after a goal keeping error by Roxene Barker who apart from that mistake had a blinder of a game.
“The game could have ended in a draw easily, Cameroon has a physically strong team but I think we matched them, they did not over power us. We had a few chances that could have won us the game, but Cameroon were lucky. They had one chance from the mistake we made, but we had better chances,” said Vera Pauw, Banyana Banyana head coach.
The match was Pauw’s first loss in charge of the Sasol sponsored women’s national team. Banyana Banyana went 10 games unbeaten in their preparation matches for the tournament.
They have two more matches to play in their group. They face another West Africa team (Ghana) on Wednesday, 15 October at the independence Stadium and Pauw is aware of their physicality.
“We are very disappointed about the results, we wanted to go out and get a good result by winning, but this does not give us a reason to put our heads down. We have two games left and that will make us even stronger.

We know that we have to win the next two games, I believe we have the team capacity to bounce back. We played very well, it was only one small mistake and they got the goal. We have a lot of experience to lift ourselves,” said captain, Janine Van Wyk.
With the tournament being used as qualifiers for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, Banyana Banyana’s hopes of making it to the world stage are still alive.
“We have two games to go, we have to lift our heads because we are not a team to give up. We still have two chances to make it through to the world cup, we have to be strong and focus on our next step which is Ghana,” concluded Van Wyk.
