SuperSport United head coach Gordon Igesund believes defending champions Platinum Stars are slight favourites heading into Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final at Orlando Stadium.
A rejuvenated Matsatsantsa outfit will be out to strip Stars of the title they won in emphatic style last season.
SuperSport booked their place in the showpiece with wins over Free State Stars, Bidvest Wits and last year’s runners-up Orlando Pirates while Dikwena defeated Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Despite SuperSport occupying a higher spot on the league table, Igesund believes Stars’ 4-2 win over AmaZulu in their last league encounter gave them an extra boost, while SuperSport suffered a 2-1 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
“I think both teams deserve to be in the final, they [Platinum Stars] beat Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs while we also had it tough by beating Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates. Both teams definitely deserve to be in the final,” said Igesund.
“We have a lot of respect for Platinum Stars and Allan Freese, they are the defending champions and we would like to change that.
“We know they are a cup team and to beat them we will have to be at our best. They are cup specialists we know that.
“I think they are slight favourites as they are the defending champions while they beat AmaZulu [last time out in the league] it should be a very tightly contested game.”
