Marques, Sono confident ahead of Play-Offs

Cosmos_Leopards1Black Leopards coach Zeca Marques and his Jomo Cosmos counterpart, Jomo Sono, are in confident mood ahead of their Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs opener in Limpopo on Sunday.

The two National First Division (NFD) heavyweights clash at the Thohoyandou Stadium with the winner set for a major psychological advantage in the race to reach the Absa Premiership.

Three points are essential for either team if they are to take a major step towards the top-flight ahead of the second game, which will introduce big-guns Moroka Swallows to the three-team mini-league.

The Birds will be desperate to make the most of their second chance after appearing to have thrown their survival chances away during the closing weeks of the regular season.

But a slip-up for AmaZulu on the final day of the campaign has given Craig Rosslee’s men hope they will be hoping to grab it.

A draw between the two NFD sides is unlikely to help either and they will be looking for the win. Marques feels his side, third-placed finishers in their league, have the potential to do it and is relishing the prospect.

“The dynamics have changed now, because motivation is slightly different,” he said. “The bar and expectation have been raised, but I think the players are up to the challenge.

“We have shown that we can do it in certain games where we have had to perform at our best and come through successfully.”

Sono, meanwhile, was deeply disappointed to miss out on automatic promotion to Lamontville Golden Arrrows. They ended as runners-up.

He is now determined to sew up their Absa Premiership return and looking ahead to the game, he said: “It’s like a knockout game, so there is no point in going to look for a draw. We’ll go at Leopards and hope to win the game.”
