Komphela succeeds Stuart Baxter, who recently left the club by mutual consent after securing the Absa Premiership title at the end of last season.

“We are delighted to welcome Steve back to Kaizer Chiefs,” said club chairman Kaizer Motaung. “Steve was here as a player and he started his coaching career at our club, when he was the assistant to Muhsin Ertugral for the 2001/2002 season.

“Three weeks ago we gathered to bid farewell to Stuart Baxter. We needed to plug the gap. We went through 25 to 30 CV’s, mainly from overseas. However, there were also some coaches from the African continent that applied. I was extremely impressed with his knowledge of the game and his plans for the team, and I felt he was clearly the best candidate to build upon our recent success and continue that into the future,” he added.

“Steve has paid his dues as a coach and he deserves the platform at Kaizer Chiefs to explore his potential.”
