Mancheste United’s four new signings, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Bastian Schweinsteiger, all completed 45 minutes during the Reds’ 1-0 win over Club America – all of them impressing on their first outing for the club.
Schneiderlin’s looping header after five minutes was the only goal of a testing first game in the US, but the attacking intent of Memphis, the forward forays of full-back Darmian and the cool-as-you-like midfield mastery of Schweinsteiger also caught the eye.
Memphis, Darmian and Schneiderlin all started the first half, while 11 changes at the break saw the introduction of World Cup-winner Schweinsteiger.
Second-half captain, Chris Smalling, said of the new signings: “I thought they were brilliant. They clicked like they’ve been here for a while. It’s promising for the new season.”
He reserved special praise for Schweinsteiger, who operated just in front of Smalling in a midfield holding role. “It’s brilliant to know he’s there in front of the back four,” he told MUTV. “He sucks players in and then plays the pass at exactly the right moment.”
But match-winner Morgan can rightly claim the headlines as he got Tour 2015, presented by Aon, off to a winning start. He told MUTV: “It’s good to start with a win. The first game is about doing what the manager wants from us. We did our best and we can correct a few things but it’s our first game. We want to get better and be ready for the Premier League.
“We worked a lot yesterday on set-pieces and I was told to get to the far post. I was happy to get the ball and it was a great cross from Mata. I am very happy to score on my first game for United. But the main thing is to get fitness in the first game back in pre-season.”
Ashley Young took to Twitter after the game to congratulate his new team-mates, saying: “Good to be back out there playing again. Well done to the boys on debut, nice goal [Morgan Schneiderlin] to seal the win!”
