Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs will take on Maritzburg United in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 Cup at the FNB Stadium, Wednesday 5 August, kickoff 19:30.

Kaizer Chiefs lost on penalties 4-3 in a derby match against arch rivals Orlando Pirates.

“Very interesting, I was part of their DNA. It will be interesting to see how they come at us,” comments Komphela on the question of facing his former team. “I helped them build a winning team now, I have to beat them.”

The two teams started the match in a typical preseason pace. Pirates were always going to look the more oiled team given the fact that they hardly had a rest during the offseason.

“We played a few practice matches in the preseason,” adds Komphela. “We still have a lot of work to put in the team. In terms of these matches losing on penalties, I can’t see any fault from my players.”

This will be Steve Komphela’s debut as a Chiefs Coach in a PSL fixture, ironically against his recent former team. Newly appointed Maritzburg United Coach Mandla Ncikazi‚ was Komphela’s assistant last season‚ when Maritzburg enjoyed their first top-eight finish in nine PSL campaigns‚ finishing eighth.

The teams will be fighting it out for the most lucrative cup competition on the African continent, with the winning team set to pocket a whopping R8 million.
