Mphahlele to lead Sundowns this season

Mphahlele01Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed their new captain for the season, with head coach Pitso Mosimane placing his faith in defender Ramahlwe ‘Rama’ Mphahlele.

Mphahlele will wear the Brazilians’ captain’s armband this season after former skipper Alje Schut’s decision to return to the Netherlands. His first game as skipper was on Wednesday night as Sundowns bowed out on penalties to Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 quarter-finals.

Only 25-years-old, Mphahlele does however have a wealth of PSL experience, having made his PSL debut for Moroka Swallows as a teenager in the 2007/ 2008 season.

Mosimane is confident he has selected the right man, and expects the Ga Mphahlele (Limpopo)-born defender to excel in the leadership position.

“Rama has the qualities, he has been the captain of junior national teams and he has got the pedigree, leadership qualities.

“We are happy with the appointment of Rama, all the pressure is going to be on him to show his leadership and we should not compare him to Alje Schut, he is Rama.I think he is the right choice for us and the players welcomed it so let’s see if he leads,” said Mosimane.

Mosiamane added that goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been appointed as vice-captain, with Thabo Nthethe the third choice skipper.
