Petr Cech made two exceptional saves late in the first half – to deny Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho – while at the other end Aaron Ramsey had a goal chalked off for offside, when it appeared Martin Skrtel had played him onside.
Both sides also hit the woodwork, Liverpool twice in the first half, Arsenal once – through Alexis Sanchez – in the second.
