Platinum Stars will have an opportunity to consolidate their position

PStars2Platinum Stars will have an opportunity to consolidate their position among the top three in the Absa Premiership this weekend, when they play against Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Royal Bafokeng on Sunday.

Stars are currently third on the Premiership standings, having accumulated 40 points in the 22 matches played this season. That means they are one point ahead of Kaizer Chiefs on the standings, but Stars do have a game in hand ahead of the match on Sunday, so their lead could stretch to four with a positive result against Aces.

Aces, who also have a considerable amount at stake this weekend, are just two points behind Chiefs at this juncture. They too, have a game in hand, so a win for Aces could see them remove Chiefs from fourth spot on the PSL log.

It would appear Stars have gathered the most momentum ahead of the weekend. The home team has won four of its last five matches in all competitions, while Aces have won just once in their last five outings – and that victory was recorded against a lower tier team in the Nedbank Cup.

In the other big fixture on Sunday, Chippa United will host Maritzburg United. Chippa are trying to consolidate their spot among the top eight in the league standings, while Maritzburg are trying to find a away out of the relegation zone. A lot is at stake for both teams.

Chippa have not won in three outings, in all competitions, while Maritzburg have won two of their last three matches.

There are two Absa Premiership matches taking place on Saturday too.

Golden Arrows will host SuperSport United at the Chatsworth Stadium, while Free State Stars host Polokwane City at Goble Park.

Arrows have lost once in their last five outings, but that defeat was recorded in their most recent match.

SuperSport United have produced a mixed bag of results in recent weeks, with their most recent being a 1-0 win against Moroka Swallows in Dobsonville in the Nedbank Cup.

Free State Stars have been most compelling in their last five outings, with the only blemish being recorded against Chippa United last month.

They play a City beat African All Stars in the Nedbank Cup earlier this month but other than that they have not won in their last five matches in all competitions.
