There has been a recurring theme coming out of the Black Aces dressing room – AmaZayoni will not be taking anything for granted when they host Maritzburg United in a Nedbank Cup last 16 match on Saturday afternoon.
The match at the Kanyamazane Stadium is set to kick off at 15H00. The round of 16 starts on Friday night (1 April, 20H00) when Bidvest Wits host Magesi FC in Johannesburg.
Maritzburg are bottom of the PSL table, while Aces have enjoyed a good season to date and are in fifth position.
But that does not mean that the Mpumalanga club will be expecting an easy ride:
“For a team that’s fighting for relegation, Maritzburg United will want to win every game to keep the momentum going,” said goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane.
His sentiments were echoed by attacking midfielder Aubrey Ngoma: “We need to be focused regardless of Maritzburg United’s current Absa Premiership position.”
While former Maritzburg forward Bongolethu Jayiya netted a hat-trick for Aces in the previous round, it’s been Collins Mbesuma, the leading goal-scorer in the league, who has been the club’s main source of goals this season.
Ngoma says that some of the other players also need to start contributing:
“We’ve come together and spoken about it over the last couple of days, and we need to relieve the pressure off him [Mbesuma],” he explained. “We need to show that he is not the only man to get goals for us, and everyone around the park needs to chip in with goals.”
