The 21-year-old has had an impressive season in the heart of Atletico’s midfield, but reached new heights on Wednesday night when he dribbled past four opposition players to slot past Manuel Neuer in the Bayern Munich goal.
Atletico now hold a one-goal lead going into their Champions League semi-final second leg, and Saul was delighted to help his team across the line.
“It’s the most important and the best too,” Saul said of his goal in a post-match interview with AS.
“I was dribbling the ball forward, I saw that I’d gone past two opponents and, as I came into the area, I got it on to my left foot to score.”
“It was a great piece of individual skill and creativity,” Atletico boss Diego Simeone said.
“He is a player who is developing well, and has been great for us.”
Bayern Munich came back into the game in the latter stages but were unable to find a vital away goal at the Vicente Calderon.
