The former Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein keeper has been playing in the PSL for a decade, but this is the first time he has been nominated for the award, having helped Aces finish behind third-placed Platinum Stars only on an inferior number of goals scored.
Having to fend off competition for his jersey from the likes of Bafana Bafana keeper Jackson Mabokgwane, the 34-year-old Walters played 22 league games and kept an impressive 10 clean sheets.
“I am obviously ecstatic. It is one of the goals I set myself since I started playing in the PSL 10 years ago, so it is a big personal achievement. I am just happy that I have reached most of my goals. It is a first nomination for me, it has always been a goal of mine,” he told the Goal website.
“Now I just want a medal, we kind of missed out on that this season and I am hoping next season I can win one of those,” Walters continued.
“I’ve always wanted to play for Bafana Bafana, I made the World Cup squad. Next season I want a league or a cup medal.”
