Vilakazi: Ex-Clever Boy poses threat to Wits’ MTN8 dreamMamelodi Sundowns playmaker Sibusiso Vilakazi has paid his respects to his former club Bidvest Wits, but is adamant his current team has what it takes to lift the MTN8 trophy on Saturday.
The Soweto-born midfield attacker started out his career in the Bidvest Wits youth academy, making his first team debut in the PSL in 2009/ 10 and going on the spend six succesful seasons with the club.
The 26-year-old was part starting XI when the Clever Boys beat AmaZulu 3-0 to win the 2010 Nedbank Cup – the last time the club has won silverware.
But having made the move to Sundowns ahead of the current season, Vilakazi’s allegiances have switched and he’ll now be out to stop the Students winning their first Top 8 trophy since 1995.
Speaking ahead of the 2016 MTN8 final this weekend, ‘Vila’ was complimentary towards his former team, but believes that Sundowns are well equipped to handle the pressure that comes with a cup final.
“I think Wits are not too far from attaining what they are out to achieve in terms of trophies and they certainly have the players to do it, ” he said at a training session this week.
“Wits are a quality side, but at the same time we also like to play under pressure. If there was no pressure, there would be no meaning to the game. That’s when your best comes out and we thrive on it.”
Saturday’s final takes place at the Mbombela Stadium with kick off set for 17H00.
