Maritzburg United summoned all their character reserves in battling to a morale-boosting 2-1 Absa Premiership win over Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
The win leaves United one point behind 15th placed Chippa United, with two matches left for both clubs.
The Team of Choice made a positive start to the game in the Limpopo province, although it was visiting keeper Richard Ofori who had some early saves to make.
United’s best chance came on 35 minutes when Siphesihle Ndlovu went through on goal but was denied at point blank range by Leopards stopper King Ndlovu, who also kept out a shot from Allan Kateregga just before half time.
The KZN Capital City side came out for the second half with their tails up and went ahead in the first minute after the restart when Mohau Mokate found the net after an assist from Fortune Makaringe.
Makaringe then forced Leopards defender Munganga into conceding an own goal as the Team of Choice doubled their lead seven minutes later.
Lidoda Duvha were however to get themselves back in the game soon after after Mwape Musonda scored in the 62nd minute.
It then took some gutsy defending and high levels of concentration as the Team of Choice held firm in defence to see out the win and collect the three points in what is always a tough away assignment at a near full-house in Thohoyandou.
