The seventh edition of the Nedbank Ke Yona Challenge will pay homage to the late Thembinkosi Mbamba when the Ke Yona Class of 2019 takes on Nedbank Cup champions, TS Galaxy, at Kameelrivier Stadium in KwaNdebele on Sunday afternoon (Kick off: 3pm)

Mbamba, the 2016 Graduate, was tragically killed in a car accident a week after helping TS Galaxy to their historic Nedbank Cup triumph in May this year. The Ekurhuleni-born youngster would have been celebrating his 24th birthday next Monday.

“Thembinkosi was one of the country’s brightest young players. We were immensely saddened to have lost a talent that was discovered through our Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search (KYTS) programme,” said Tobie Badenhorst, Group Head of Sponsorship and Cause Marketing at Nedbank.

“TS Galaxy and ourselves will hand over a framed jersey to his immediate family ahead of the match as we mark respect to his contributions to football in his short playing career. The two teams will also stage a moment of silence just before kick off in his honour. It is fitting that this Ke Yona Challenge match is being played in Kameelrivier, and at a venue where his star shone while playing for TS Galaxy.”

The Ke Yona Challenge fixture features the Nedbank Cup champions and best talent from the Nedbank KYTS football talent quest, with the 18-man Class of 2019 officially unveiled this week.

There were over 14 000 young hopefuls that registered for this year’s search.

TS Galaxy play in the GladAfrica Championship where they became the first South African team not campaigning in the elite ranks to win a Premier Soccer League cup competition.

Nedbank, alongside their partnership with The Sports Trust, will also hand over playing kits to three local schools prior to the match. The three schools are Sizani Primary School, Morwe Middle School and Tholulwazi Secondary School.

Badenhorst concluded, “Nedbank is highly involved in our communities and partner with various stakeholders to address the needs of the country. This year, we have managed to provide new playing kits to over 30 schools for 400 children, which is another great milestone towards sports development in this country.”

Gates will open at 12pm with tickets available for free across Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers retail outlets countrywide when you produce an ID document.

The match will also be broadcast on SuperSport 4 (Channel 204) on DSTV.
