Maritzburg United left winger Mxolisi Kunene says they are highly motivated ahead of their Telkom Knockout quarter-final against Highlands Park tonight.

The Team of Choice will be aiming to reach the semi-final when they take on the Lions of the North at the Harry Gwala Stadium. Kick-off is at 20h00.

“It’s all about hard work and determination,” Kunene said. “So far we have been doing very well as a team, collecting points. So towards the cup match, we are motivated and are taking it seriously as it’s our wish to win something this season.”

United and Highlands played to a 1-1 draw in the Absa Premiership encounter in Pietermaritzburg earlier this season .

“I think it’s going to be a tough one but all I can say it’s an advantage to us as we are playing at home in front of our supporters at Harry Gwala,” Kunene explained. “That is going to boost us a lot.”

The 27-year-old also revealed that fans were playing a big role to motivate them as players during games.

“They play a big role for us as they always come in numbers to support and give our morale a boost,” Kunene stated. “So they are very important to us.”

The Blue Army have won four matches consecutively in all competitions.

However, they are still working towards further improvements, particularly in defence, according to Kunene.

“We have been working hard in our defence as we saw that last season, we conceded lot of goals but this season we are trying our best to lock up at the back,” he adds. “The good thing about it is that we have started winning matches.”

Coach Eric Tinkler and his charges eliminated Bidvest Wits on penalties in the first round. After playing against Highlands, they will travel to Orlando Stadium to take on Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership clash on Tuesday.
