To their credit, they have performed where it matters most out on the field having accumulated 19 out of a possible 21 points from their seven group matches. They concluded their group stage programme with a comfortable 3-0 win over Transition Football at Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto on Thursday.

In fact, they are the first team to qualify for the last 16 and captain of the side, Lufuno Matshaba, says they are relishing the challenge.

The 19-year-old sounded over-confident, but given their current play Andile ‘Krol’ Zulu’s boys can back it all up.

“Firstly, we are not happy, because we wanted maximum points – that was the objective of the club, meaning we wanted to win all our seven group games, but we drew one,” says Matshaba.

“This year we are winning it – it’s ours. I’ve been watching the other teams and comparing them to us, they have no chance,” says a bullish Matshaba.

The other teams would be watching White City Spurs with keen interest.

The competition is at an all-time high and saying you are winning it is easier said than done.

You just mention the teams and you get a feeling that a lot more teams have a good chance; Sneke Chillers, Dube Continental, Soweto Super United, Meadowlands Harmony, NC Zasco, High Care FC, Strokes, Villa Marseille, OPS Shining Stars, Gauteng SAPS, Premier Impala, La Masia, Sneke Movers, Diepkloof Citizens and the list goes on.

Matshaba, however, insists that White City Spurs’ dominance in Group E is proof that they may go all the way.

“I’m not scared of any of them,” continues Matshaba, who will enrol for a Criminology course at University of Pretoria from January.

“Even Sneke Chillers. We beat them in the group stage (last year) and in the final, they brought in a lot of different players. It was a new team and included some professional players like Zakhele Lepasa (who’s now with Orlando Pirates) and it was a challenge for us,” he recalls.

“But this year we are ready for anything, because we know what to expect.

“So we don’t care who they bring this time. They can fetch the whole NFD (GladAfrica Championship).”

Matshaba adds that their month-long preparation ahead of the tournament has really helped their cause.

“It’s credit to coach Krol. He’s given us clear instructions and a month before Discovery, we started with our preparations so he brought the team together,” he concludes.
