SuperSport United missed out on a chance to move up to second spot in the Absa Premiership as they slumped to a 1-0 loss away to Golden Arrows at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday afternoon.
The only goal of the game came in rather unfortunate circumstances as Luke Fleurs inadvertently guided the ball into the back of his own net.
Victory moves Abafana Bes’thende up to seventh place on the log standings and seven points behind Matsatsantsa who remain in third.
Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges on a scorching afternoon in the KwaZulu-Natal province, with the first real shot in anger falling to the hosts in the 37th minute.
A neat one-two between Knox Mutizwa and Lerato Lamola opened a clear view on goal for the latter, but the Arrows forward hopelessly scuffed his effort wide of goal – with only Ronwen Williams to beat – as his goal drought continues.
SuperSport’s first chance came after the break and Bradley Grobler was only denied an 11th goal of the season by Sifiso Mlungwana who made a superb save.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 56th minute as Mutizwa’s strike hit the crossbar before bouncing off the unlucky Fleurs and into the back of his own net.
Matsatsantsa pushed forward in search of the equaliser and came close in the 88th minute as Kudakwashe Mahachi let fly a rasping left-footed drive, only to be denied by Mlungwana. The save proved pivotal as Arrows held on for all three points.
