Nkanyiso Zungu – Usuthu’s emerging starlet

AmaZulu FC’s Nkanyiso Zungu is one of the most promising youngsters in the current Usuthu squad.

The talented attacking midfielder, who hails from Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal, has grown in leaps and bounds over the last two seasons in the First National Division (NFD).

Zungu first came to prominence when he was named in the South African national under-23 squad despite being only 19 in November, 2015.

Unfortunately, he could not make the cut for the SA squad ahead of the 2015 CAF Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals which were hosted by Senegal.

Zungu then focused solely on his Usuthu career during the 2015/16 NFD campaign as AmaZulu targeted promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

This was also his maiden season with the first team after being promoted from the club’s academy. He enjoyed game-time – scoring once in 27 league matches.

In his second campaign, Zungu was used mostly as an impact player off the bench as Usuthu mounted a serious challenge for a place in the top three positions in the NFD.

AmaZulu narrowly missed out on a place in the PSL Promotion/Relegation play-offs on the last day of the season with Zungu having featured in 16 league games – scoring once in the process.

However, the club returned to the top flight league after successfully purchasing NFD champions Thanda Royal Zulu’s PSL status.

Zungu has already caught the eye of AmaZulu’s new head coach Cavin Johnson, who replaced Joey Antipas prior to the 2017/18 PSL campaign.

The creative midfielder is eager to cement his place in the Usuthu starting line-up. Zungu has made two starts against Free State Stars and Chippa United in his debut season in the Absa Premiership.

Now that the 21-year-old has had his first taste of top flight football, he will be looking to continue developing into a key player at Usuthu and help the club achieve its objectives.
